General

• Varus is voiced by Oliver Magaña in LATAM, who is also voiced by Dr. World, Brolas, Kog'Maw, Nautilus, Rammus, Talon, Thresh, Veigar and Ziggs, and by Fernando De Luis in EUW.
• Varus means "bent outward, legs arched" in Latin, in contrast to valgus "bent inward, striking the knees"; [1]
  • The ancient Romans used this adjective as a cognomen to describe people with the anatomical deformity who bowed their legs outward like arches.
  • Humorously, the fact that his name is the term for a knee deformity and the fact that Varus is an archer could be a reference to the famous "Arrow to the Knee" meme from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
• Varus was the first champion to be released in Season Two with only an alternate skin, with subsequent champions following this pattern.
• The temple of Palas refers to the epithet Παλλάς, which means "youth, girl", of the pre-Greek goddess Athena. [2]
  • Later Greek writers re-identified Pallas as a Titan killed by Athena, interpreting Pallas as "Carrier", from πάλλω pállō.
• Varus is, along with Blitzcrank, Caitlyn, Lissandra, Rumble, Sion, We, Xerath y Ziggs, one of the few champions who can apply crowd control on themselves.
• Varus' body style is similar to Solus, the leader of T'Lan from the game Breakdown.
• Varus is the first of three dark-themed champions with a light-themed skin, the second being Syndra and the third is Aatrox.
  • Of these three, the Varus aspect is the only one that does not belong to the Justiceman theme.

• Varus is around 3496 years old as he rose during the Icathia rebellion against Shurima.

While Varus from League of Legends defends his position but loses everything to the Noxian invaders, to which he swears revenge.

• During development it was called "Jubei".
• Piercing Arrow of Varus is a reworking of the old skill In the sights of Tristana who (while active) would slow her movement speed to increase range.
• The League of Legends art team worked with Gabe and Tycho from Penny Arcade to make a "special edition" champion preview for Varus. [8]

Relationships

Varus, the Arrow of Castigp

• It is hinted in his lore that Varus may have been imprisoned in his bow, by a possible previous avatar of the Aspect of the Sun.
  • This warrior queen used it to destroy the gateway to the Darkin World, and then sealed the archway in the land that would later become known as Jonia.
• Varus was freed from his prison by two Ionian beast hunters, Valmar and Kai.
  • Valmar hoped that the well that imprisoned Varus would heal Kai. He did, but freed Varus and fused their bodies.
    • Now they are in a constant state of fighting to gain control of their fused body, although it seems that Darkin is winning.
  • In the censored version, Kai and Valmar are close friends rather than lovers.

Varus

• Varus used to have a wife and a son named Theshan who were killed by the Noxian army during their invasion.
• It is understood that Riven was part of the troop that destroyed her home.
