And the faithful will be rewarded

What are you willing to sacrifice for your faith? Only devotees will be able to dominate the next champion we have prepared for you. A new marksman, raised from birth with a single purpose: to protect the faith against those who follow the sun. In constant training, mastering the various weapons of faith, exchanging them like lunar cycles with just that lonely voice, pressing, comforting, loving ... If you think you can meet the challenge, you must also train hard and reach a zen level of concentration to reap the strengths. rewards.

So the question arises once again: what are you willing to sacrifice for your faith?

    Por Riot Aether[2]

    Aphelios / Development

Most champions can be summed up pretty quickly, but Aphelios isn't like most. Learning to play with the Weapon of the Faithful requires discipline, concentration, and mental agility, so consider this manual your first test of faith on the road to mastering one of the most dexterous champions in the entire game (seriously, this article has a lot of information to process. Read it a couple of times, at the very least).

We're going to start with the general structure of the Aphelios kit, and then we'll see what each weapon does.

    How the kit works

Weapons, Basic Attacks, and Ammo Aphelios / Development

Aphelios switches between five weapons, each with its own basic attack. Attack with your weapon principal, but always carry a secondary to which you can change with the W.

    Aphelios / Development

Aphelios cannot choose which two weapons to have equipped. Each one has 50 ammo ("moonlight"), and when one runs out of ammo, you will receive the next. Empty weapons go to the end of the queue to reload.

    Aphelios / Development

Since Aphelios can switch between his primary and secondary weapon, the order of the weapons will change throughout the game depending on which weapons you use first.

    Skills

Aphelios only has three buttons: Q, W, and R. The W causes him to switch between his primary and secondary weapon, leaving him with only two abilities as such, more or less.

Each of the five weapons has its own Q when equipped as a weapon principal. Each Q applies additional attacks and effects that vary depending on its weapon secondary. The five abilities of the Q cost mana and ammo, and each has its own cooldown (you can use the Q, switch weapons, and use another Q immediately). Aphelios automatically learns Q at 2nd level, and his power slowly increases throughout the game. We'll see what each Q does in the weapon sections later.

Aphelios' ultimate ability, Aphelios / Development Lunar Vigil - Launch a moon bomb that explodes on impact with an enemy, dealing damage to nearby enemies. Aphelios then hits all enemies affected by the blast with Empowered Basic Attacks from his primary weapon. Learn R automatically at level 6, and level up at levels 11 and 16 automatically.

    Level ups

Since Aphelios learns his Q and R automatically, he spends the 18 points he gets for leveling up on stats, rather than skills:

    • Attack damage
    • Attack speed
    • Extra armor penetration

    Calibrum, the rifle

Aphelios / Development Aphelios / Development Calibrum

Calibrum is a weapon for harass / wear down. His basic attacks have additional range.

When Ability Damage is dealt with Calibrum, enemies are marked. Aphelios can right click on enemies marked, no matter where they are on the map, to execute a basic attack with their weapon secondary (or the weapon other than Calibrum, in case you made it your secondary weapon before firing). This attack detonates other nearby marks, dealing bonus damage to marked enemies.

    Aphelios / Development Calibrum's Q: Lunar Shot

Fire a skill shot that damages the first unit hit and the brand.

Aphelios / Development Effect when using Moonwatch

The attacks that follow Moonwatch mark all enemies hit. These marks deal more damage when consumed.

    Severum, the scythe revolver

Aphelios / Development Aphelios / Development Severus

Severus you are unarmed endurance Heals Aphelios for a portion of the damage he deals. Severum's bonus heal turns into a small shield.

Aphelios / Development Q about Severus: Arremetida

You gain movement speed and fire quickly with your weapons principal y secondary to the nearest enemy, prioritizing champions. Lunge shots behave like basic attacks, but deal reduced damage.

Aphelios / Development Effect when using Moonwatch

Moonwatch grants Aphelios a flat heal.

    Gravitum, the cannon

Aphelios / Development Aphelios / Development Gravitum

Gravitum is a weapon of utility It applies a slow that decreases over time to enemies.

Q de Gravitum: Total Eclipse Q of Gravitum: Eclipse

Damages and immobilizes all enemies affected by the Gravitum slow on the map. Eclipse does not use the weapon secondary.

Aphelios / Development Effect when using Moonwatch

Attacks following Moonwatch apply a much greater slow.

    Infernum, the flamethrower

Aphelios / Development Aphelios / Development hell

Hell you are unarmed area of effect / wave clearance. Deal bonus damage with basic attacks and abilities. Also, create a cone of damage after enemies hit.

Aphelios / Development Q From Hell: Crepuscular Wave

Launches a blaze, dealing damage to enemies. Then, attack all enemies hit with the weapon secondary.

Aphelios / Development Effect when using Moonwatch

Attacks following Moonwatch create circles of damage around enemies hit, rather than creating cones behind them.

    Grow up, el chakram

Aphelios / Development Aphelios / Development must grow

Crescendum is a short-range, damage-per-second weapon that functions like a boomerang. When Aphelios attacks with Crescendum, he cannot attack again until the weapon has returned to him. However, his attack restarts as soon as he retrieves the weapon. Attack speed increases the speed at which Crescendum moves. The closer Aphelios is to his target, the less distance Crescendum has to travel (and therefore Aphelios will attack faster).

When abilities or attacks afterwards deal damage with Crescendum, they create temporary copies of the weapon for each enemy hit, increasing the strength of Crescendum's basic attacks.

Aphelios / Development Q about Grow: Centinela

Deploy a turret that shoots the nearest enemy with the weapon secondary.

Aphelios / Development Effect when using Moonwatch

If Moonwatch hits fewer than three enemies, the attacks that follow the ability will continue to increase Crescendum's basic attack damage as if it had hit at least three.

    Custom interface

It is a lot of information to assimilate and there are many things to take into account. Therefore, Aphelios has a personalized interface to facilitate the process.

    Aphelios / Development
    1. The Passive: Explains Aphelios' weapons and how to level up. The description is as long as this article.
    2. Aphelios' primary weapon and his remaining ammunition.
    3. The Q.
    4. Aphelios' secondary weapon and its remaining ammunition. If your Q is on cooldown, the icon will also indicate the remaining cooldown.
    5. The next weapon that you will get when one of the ones you have runs out of ammo.
    6. La R.

Also, if your main weapon has 10 ammo or less left, an ammo counter will appear on the right side of the screen so you can keep track of how many shots you have left.

    The Weapon of the Faithful

Mastering Aphelios' arsenal of moonstone weapons can prove to be one of the most challenging challenges in League of Legends. Are you sufficiently committed to this task? Get ready, because the Weapon of the Faithful will arrive in version 9.24.

    Champion in depth: Aphelios

    Por Riot Cashmir [3]

    Aphelios / Development

Sometimes when we launch a new champion, we get a “What the hell, Rito? This is too much! TOO!".

Aphelios will almost definitely get that reaction. And that's okay. In fact, it's great. Aphelios came to prove how much you think you can sacrifice. Can you give up control over the weapons you wield? Will you be able to learn about 30 different skills? Can you blindly trust that the voice that only you can hear knows exactly what you need?

If you believe that the path to victory is in the whispers of the moon, then it is time for you to choose Aphelios (and Alune). And the fruit of your faith can be something very beautiful.

Aphelios / Development Faith is perseverance

he process of Aphelios, from an initial concept to its creation, was extensive. In fact, it took almost a year, but it started, as with all champions, with a goal. His was to provide creative adaptability by using skill combinations, rather than quick reflexes. Specifically, we designed it to be the Aphelios / Development Yasuo that generates epically monumental plays.

But where do we start with a goal like that? What decisions led the team to conceive Aphelios, the religious assassin Lunari with an arsenal of lunar relic weapons? The answer is obvious: it all started with wizards and battle royale games.

    Aphelios / Development

"Even after 150 champions, League of Legends still doesn't have a wizard," explains senior narrative writer David "Interlocutioner" Slagle. "Although he does have a half-naked little blue man ... In fact, he has seven versions of him, but he is still not a sorcerer."

For the team, the classic sorcerer archetype is someone who fights evil with knowledge. No quick reflexes, precise skill shots, or perfectly timed skills. All that matters is the knowledge of which tool to use at any given moment.

"I don't know who made the decision to turn Aphelios into a marksman," says game designer Stash "Riot Stashu" Chelluck. “The initial idea about the wizard was really cool, but the gaming experience was no different from the other wizards available. We thought that it would be very unusual for him to occupy a place in the selection of shooters. What if instead of an arsenal of spells, Aphelios had an arsenal of weapons?

    Aphelios / Development

Shooters offer largely the same experience across all champions. You go to the lane, kill minions, put the minimap aside, die a few times, get a kill or two, and weapon your items. Skills change, but the general experience is the same.

With a defined role and an overall “alternating weapon shooter” design as a guide, the team focused on finding out who exactly Aphelios was.

“I started thinking about different factions of Runeterra that might have a gun-swapping shooter,” shares concept artist Sunny “Kindlejack” Pandita. "One of them was Braum's evil older brother, who carries a totem that summons Freljordian animal spirits to change abilities."

Zaun was another option: a mad scientist mixing chemicals and conducting experiments to create unique abilities or weapons. And if it's not Zaun, what about Piltover?

"Interlocutioner had a great idea that is based on the concept of 'the right tool for the job," says Kindlejack. And he felt a bit like a bounty hunter. He was a person that you would hire because he knows how to hunt whoever or whatever, since he has the ideal weapon for every situation ”.

The idea evolved into a Piltovian bounty hunter who has imprisoned his latest target. His "assistant" flies around the Rift and hurls weapons at his master whenever he needs them.

But it just didn't feel like Aphelios.

    Aphelios / Development

“I looked for last year's Met Gala outfits and saw that they combined religious iconography with high fashion,” says Kindlejack. "I thought it was something worthwhile, so I started to draw it."

The "fashionable monk and almost selflessly romantic killer" design caught the team's attention. A champion who firmly believes in his cause, with unwavering devotion… Something admirable, but terrifying. It was perfect. But how did he fit in with Runeterra?

    Aphelios / Development

“I was talking to one of the conceptual artists in charge of another project. He told me that they had done a lot of research on different factions of Runeterra, ”explains Kindlejack. “So he shared some visual analysis with me. The Lunari stood out for being a faction that players recognize, but that is not yet explored ”.

Before Aphelios, Diana was the only Lunari representative in our champion lineup. And he didn't provide much information about his town to the players. What do we really know about the Lunari beyond the "moon"? Why fight? What interests them?

"With Aphelios, we had the opportunity to envision a whole world around him," adds Interlocutioner. "What happens on Mount Targon? Now we have an idea about that ”.

Aphelios is a Lunari assassin who does not enjoy killing, but still kills… and he is not alone.

Aphelios / Development Faith is trust

"Aphelios and Alune are twins, born during a rare celestial event," explains Interlocutioner. “The moon in Runeterra has an orbit and the moon in the spirit realm reflects it. Every so often there is a convergence and those Lunari born at that time receive incredible magical gifts ”.

Alune spent her life training to become an oracle and use the magical light of the moon to reveal hidden truths and paths, while Aphelios trained to eliminate anyone who threatened to harm the Lunari. The pair represents the two sides of the Lunari faith: magical mysticism and grounded realism. And the connection they have manifests itself in different ways in the game.

"We are looking for a narrative justification to explain where the weapons came from." Riot Stashu says. “Why can't the player choose the weapons to fight with? How does Aphelios obtain them? Why can't this murderous monk control them? "

Because Alune always knows what Aphelios needs.

At the start of a game, Aphelios drinks poison to activate a psychic connection with Alune. In order for her to speak to Aphelios and send him the magic weapons, she must be in her stronghold within the spirit realm. But the poison not only creates a connection, it also gives Aphelios the power of the night. His muscles tense and he can channel Alune's magic, but not without sacrificing something first.

    Aphelios / Development

“The poison makes Aphelios's throat swell. For that reason it does not speak, but the poison does not only cause that. The connection allows Alune to know their thoughts, their souls converge, ”explains Interlocutioner. “I think if we knew exactly what someone else was thinking, we would get hurt most of the time. The visceralness of our realities often does not match those of other people. And Aphelios and Alune have to deal with this every time they go online. They cannot lie to each other or to themselves. "

Aphelios / Development Aphelios / Development

"I will guide you from our strength ... I promise"

Aphelios' silence posed a unique challenge: Would players empathize with a champion who doesn't speak? Would the connection be ruined by hearing the voice of someone who is not actually present? How do you approach the sound design of someone speaking telepathically from another dimension?

“It was extremely important to achieve the 'voice over walkie talkie' effect for Alune's dubbing,” explains dubbing designer Julian “Riot Zimberfly” Samal. “We had to imply that she was in a distant location, without sounding too invasive. Because, if it was too forced, it could cause confusion and interrupt the gaming experience ”.

To accomplish this, Riot Zimberfly processed unintelligible whispers similar to spells from Alune's dubbing and used them to create the "walkie talkie" effect. What is implied is that some of Alune's thoughts escape through the lunar conduit to Aphelios. His fragile, but firm and reassuring voice, combined with layers of music and textures to create the feeling that it comes from inside your head.

    Aphelios / Development

Support is not only manifested in the magical weapons granted by Alune and in her kind words of encouragement.

“When we decided on the particular Aphelios outfit, we all got together in a room to discuss how to explain his abilities to the players in-game,” explains Kindlejack. "I wanted to create a custom interface as we had started experimenting with the final skins and Aphelios gave us a real reason to do so."

Aphelios has a Q, an R and ... another R. He has no passive, neither a W (real) nor an E.

Aphelios / Development Aphelios / Development

Weapon exchange in the Aphelios interface

LoL never had a champion that required a completely different interface. Some of the ultimate skins offer add-ons, and skill-enhancing champions require extra dedication. But a champion who doesn't level up conventionally, has "fewer" abilities, switches weapons, and uses an "ammunition" system requires more than just a little extra dedication.

Aphelios / Development Aphelios / Development

Different versions of the Aphelios interface

"It was a really cool and kind of scary moment," says Kindlejack. “I've never done anything like this, but I think its custom-built interface offers a unique experience for loyal and dedicated fans (and none of this would have been possible without the work of Bryce“ The King of Rad ”Mercado, the interface engineer) ”.

With Alune's care bringing you guidance, encouragement, and most of all, an arsenal of deadly celestial weapons, you can use the custom interface to focus on what really matters: making the plays.

    Faith is unshakable

How do you ensure that a champion with five weapons works consistently? How do you make weapons feel unique but recognizable? And how do these fit in with the Lunari when the Targonians use spears and swords?

Aphelios' weapons are not exactly what they seem.

    Aphelios / Development

"They are not conventional projectile weapons with magazines," explains Kindlejack. “Rather, they are like sacred Lunari artifacts. When designing them, he imagined that they would normally be on display in a temple. It is the combination of the gifts of Aphelios and Alune that makes them lethal. "

    Aphelios / Development

Due to LoL's vertical perspective, the silhouettes of the weapons would be difficult to see. Their design had to be distinguishable, so we mimicked the silhouettes of other weapons to help communicate the gaming experience; For example, long-range weapons resemble Caitlyn's rifle. But even so, weapons are difficult to interpret during gameplay, so Aphelios' posture and animations are essential to meeting that challenge. Their stance and movements vary for each weapon, in a distinctive and intuitive way, so players know which abilities (and basic attacks) they have access to.

Aphelios / Development Aphelios / Development

Study of postures for the weapons of Aphelios

"After we agreed that the character design would be 'murderer Lunari,' we took the idea to the end," laughs Kindlejack. “We made a few adjustments, but unlike most champions, its visual design didn't change much. Ah, but his arsenal? I redesigned that about 10 times over the course of a year. "

Every time a weapon was changed, added or removed, the concept art had to be updated to reflect that change. All colors and shapes had to be unique, as was the way Aphelios held the weapons, but the quest for clarity was not limited solely to the physical design of the weapons.

"It's very difficult to design magic weapon sounds," says Lead Sound Designer Brandon "Riot Sound Bear" Reader. “Aphelios does not cast spells, he shoots with weapons. But they are not conventional weapons, so they should have sounded… magical anyway. "

But why does Aphelios have to change weapons? Due to its moonlight "ammunition", it's obvious. And as Alune's magic eventually wanes, the weapons fade through the veil to recharge with lunar energy. That means you have to adapt and react.

"One of the benefits of not being able to choose which weapon to use is that we can make the combination of their weapons insanely powerful in different situations," says Riot Stashu.

    Aphelios / Development

“Because of the ammunition, players are forced to react in a situation where they have to recognize their strengths at that exact moment. You can give them a weapon combination that's so effective for frontal combat that they think, 'Damn. I have to fight RIGHT NOW. '

This is the time for the big plays. Aphelios' unique weapon combinations create opportunities for him to lead his teammates into a showdown, to lay siege to towers and objectives, or even to go toe-to-toe with some of the best duelists in the game. This requires players to recognize and even anticipate their strengths in order to be the most effective on the battlefield. Otherwise they will have to crawl back to base and (hopefully) use their weapons better next time.

    The faithful will be rewarded

Just as Aphelios trained for years to become a Lunari assassin, you too must train to understand and trust your abilities. Aphelios knows how to complete the mission, and in time you will too.

When dark times loom over Mount Targon, will your faith stand?

    Awake to my voice
    And hear her call within
    Embrace the fear inside
Surrender your mind to night again

    Close your eyes
    Have faith in me
    And leave the light behind

    You're never alone
Whenever it's cold let the shadows take hold
    You're never alone

    Let the poison in
    Feel the warmth arise

    Close your eyes
    Have faith in me
    And leave the light behind

    You're never alone
Whenever it's cold let the shadows take holdv You're never alone
    And live within, dreams revealed
    I'm with you, never alone

    Soon you'll be
    Set truly free
From all those chains you bear

    You're never alone
    And live within, dreams revealed
    I'm with you, never alone
